Choosing a Therapist #01

How to Choose a Therapist

Choosing a therapist is a very important decision. The relationship between therapist and client should be one of mutual trust and recognition.

As a client you will need to trust your therapist to provide professional guidance and offer treatment options that meet all your needs.

In order to do this your therapist needs to be properly qualified in the treatments they are suggesting.

Unfortunately many therapists are poorly qualified and have very limited experience. It is common to find a therapist with a string of letters after their name but on closer examination you may find these “qualifications” are merely organisations that the therapist has simply paid to join and are not recognised qualifications at all.

It is very common to find that many Hypnotherapists have qualified after only a few days training or even after completing a distance learning course. They may never have worked with a client at all during their training

Secondly many therapists will attend a or 1-day lecture and collect a certificate of attendance and then claim this as a qualification in some aspect of therapy.

Before you choose your therapist you should ask them a few simple questions:

  • Where and with whom did you train?

  • How long have you been qualified?

  • Was the training course externally validated?

  • How long did your training take?

  • Can you provide contact information for your training organisation?

  • Was your training wholly or partly via distance learning?

  • Do they have professional indemnity insurance?

  • Do they abide by a written code of ethics?

  • Are they subject to a formal complaints procedure?

  • Are they members of a Nationally Recognised Professional Body?

  • Can you contact that body with a question or complaint?

  • Do their qualifications look to good to be true? If they do then they usually are.
